For museums and galleries

Virtual tours for museums, galleries and heritage sites

Open your doors to people who cannot visit, and keep each exhibition online long after it closes. Add a spoken guide, notes on every work and pictures of the details.

In short

A museum or gallery virtual tour is a 360° photo of each room, with hotspots on the works: a note, a close-up picture, a video or a recorded commentary. Panoramr keeps the tour online for as long as you host it, in five more languages, with a text version for screen readers. Making it is free; hosting it without Panoramr’s branding costs from £36 a year, in a Vault of up to 36 photos.

How museums and galleries use a tour

  • An archive of every exhibition

Photograph each show before it comes down, and keep a tour of it online for good.

  • Visitors who cannot come

People who live far away, who are unwell or who cannot manage the stairs see the collection too.

  • Schools and learning

Teachers prepare a visit, or run it from the classroom, with notes and questions on the works.

  • Heritage and places of worship

Show rooms that are closed to the public, the roof, the crypt, or a building being restored.

What to photograph

Shoot when the galleries are empty, with the exhibition lighting on.

How to take the photos
  • The entrance hall and the welcome desk
  • Each gallery, from its centre
  • In front of the key works, close enough to read
  • The temporary exhibition, before it closes
  • Rooms closed to the public
  • The view from the tower, the roof or the gallery
  • The café, the shop and the learning room
  • Lifts, ramps and step-free routes

Two ways to get the photos

A tour is a 360° photo of each space, linked together. Who takes them is up to you.

Hire a professional

A 360° photographer shoots each space and hands you the photos. Many build the whole tour in Panoramr too, and hand it over to your account, ready to publish.

Take your own

With a 360° camera and a tripod, one press takes a whole room. Export the photos from the camera’s app and upload them.

What museums and galleries use most

  • A spoken guide

A curator’s commentary on each work, playing from the direction of the work as the visitor turns.

    How it works
  • Notes, pictures and links in the room

A note on each work: the artist, the date, the story, with a close-up picture.

    How it works
  • Picture galleries

A badge that opens close-ups of the details a 360° photo cannot show.

    How it works
  • Five more languages

Translate the tour into Spanish, French, German, Chinese or Arabic. Visitors switch with one click on a paid plan or a hosted tour.

    How it works
  • A text version of the tour

Switch on the Accessibility Line and visitors can open a plain text version: each room’s name, description, links and info text.

    How it works
  • Pictures and screens on the walls

Play a film on a wall, or put a caption board onto a plinth, inside the photo.

How a tour is made

  1. 1

    Upload your photos

Open Create Tour, give the tour a name and drop your photos in. No sign-up and no card. They are prepared in your browser, and the tour uploads by itself when they are ready.

  2. 2

    Design it

Choose a theme, then make it yours: colours, menus, buttons and the look of each hotspot. Choose where visitors start looking in each room.

  3. 3

    Link the rooms

Add hotspots so visitors can walk from one room to the next, and add text, pictures, video or a floor plan where they help.

  4. 4

    Keep it

Create a free account and the tour is yours. A guest tour is deleted after 2 days.

  5. 5

    Put it online

Publish it free with Panoramr’s branding, or buy a Vault for it to take the branding off.

  6. 6

    Share it

Paste its embed code into your website, and send its link by email or post it on social media.

What it costs

Making the tour is free. One exhibition fits a Vault; a museum keeping a tour of every show can host them all on a plan.

Questions

Can we keep an exhibition online after it closes?

Yes. Photograph it before it comes down; the tour stays online for as long as you host it.

Can we add an audio guide?

Yes. Add a recorded commentary to a spot in a room; it plays from that direction when a visitor clicks it.

Is the tour accessible?

Switch on the Accessibility Line and visitors can open a plain text version: each room’s name, description, links and notes. Keyboard users reach hotspots with Tab, and a device that asks for less motion gets instant cuts. We do not claim it meets an accessibility standard.

Can we show it in other languages?

Yes: Spanish, French, German, Chinese and Arabic, with a switch for visitors, when the tour is hosted or you are on a paid plan.

How much does it cost?

Making it is free. Hosting it without our branding costs from £36 a year, in a Vault of up to 36 photos.

Ways to share it

  • On your own website

Copy the embed code from the tour’s Publish tab and paste it into your page. It works with WordPress, Squarespace, Wix and most other sites.

    How to embed a tour
  • By its link

Send the tour’s address by email, put it in a booking confirmation or a newsletter, or post it on social media.

  • On Explore

Panoramr’s gallery of tours, with buttons to share yours on X, Facebook, LinkedIn and by email. A free tour is always listed there; a hosted one only if you want.

  • Only with your team

Keep it private while you work on it, and invite colleagues or your web designer to view or edit it with you.
