Add a YouTube, Vimeo or video file to a tour

Show a YouTube, Vimeo or MP4 video in a tour, on a surface or in a window, and what the player does about autoplay, sound and loops.

The short answer

There are two ways to show a video. Surface Media with the content type Video puts it on a spot in the scene, where it plays by itself, muted, on a loop. An infotation with the Video variant puts a play badge in the scene and opens the video in a window, with sound, when a visitor clicks it. Both take a YouTube address, a Vimeo address or an MP4 file.

Which route to use

Surface Media Infotation, Video variant
Where visitors see it On a surface in the scene In a window over the scene
It starts When a visitor enters the scene, set to autoplay, muted After a click on the badge. Set to start at once if Autoplay Video is ticked; if not, the visitor presses play
Sound Starts muted. A video file has no controls Sound on
Loop Yes No
It stops Leaving the scene pauses it Closing the window (the X, or a click outside it)

Who can do it

  • The owner, and collaborators whose role includes the Hotspots Tab and the Panoramrs Tab: Editors and Admins by default.
  • Any plan. A video file you upload is limited by the tour owner's plan to 10 MB on Free, 50 MB on Pro, 50 MB on Agency and 50 MB on Enterprise. An account with a running Vault has a higher limit.

What you can use

  • YouTube: youtube.com/watch?v=..., youtu.be/... or youtube.com/embed/.... Shorts, live and playlist addresses are not recognized.
  • Vimeo: vimeo.com/ and the video's number. Only the number is used: the extra code on the address of an unlisted video is dropped, so such a video may not play. Channel and showcase addresses are not recognized.
  • A video file: an MP4 uploaded with Browse and Upload new. The picker offers MP4 files only.
  • On the live site the tour's page tells browsers where it may load things from. Frames may come from Panoramr's own addresses and storage, YouTube and Vimeo. Video files may come from Panoramr's own addresses and storage. A file linked from another website stays empty, so upload it.

Open a video in a window

  1. Open the tour, click the Hotspots tab, click a scene and click Add Infotation. Click the picture where the badge should go.
  2. Under Variant choose Video.
  3. In Video paste the address, or click Browse to pick or upload an MP4. For a YouTube address a green line reads Valid Video ID Detected: and the ID. Vimeo and file addresses show no line.
  4. Tick Autoplay Video if the video should start as soon as the window opens.
  5. Open the Preview tab and click the badge to try it.

Visitors see the badge with the tour's video icon, and a click opens a window with the video. The editor does not play it: clicking the badge there selects it.

Put a video on a surface

Choose Video under Content Type in Surface Media, paste the address in Media Source and pin the corners. There is no autoplay box: the video is always set to autoplay, muted and loop.

What visitors see

  • A surface video asks YouTube or Vimeo to autoplay, mute and loop (a video file is set the same way). Whether the video then starts on its own is outside Panoramr's control.
  • A surface video loads when the visitor first enters the scene. The window video loads when the visitor opens the window.
  • The player does not ask visitors before it loads a YouTube or Vimeo frame. What those sites do with the request is outside Panoramr's control.
  • Leaving a scene pauses its video files and blanks its frames. A frame starts again when the visitor returns.
  • A save refreshes the stored copy that visitors get, unless the tour has Draft Workflows on: then they see it after Publish Changes (my changes do not show).

Troubleshooting

Visitors still see my old YouTube video after I picked an uploaded file with Browse. Browse leaves the old YouTube ID in place. Clear the Video box (select the text, delete it and click outside the box), then use Browse again, or paste the file's address into the box.

No Valid Video ID Detected: line appears for a YouTube address. The address is not in a form Panoramr recognizes. Copy it from the video page's address bar or its Share button.

The frame is empty, or shows a message. A message inside the frame is not one of Panoramr's: check the video on YouTube or Vimeo. An empty frame can also mean the address is not one the tour's page allows.

The video does not start by itself. For a window video, tick Autoplay Video. For a surface video, whether it starts is outside Panoramr's control; a visitor can click the frame.

A surface video has no sound. By design: it starts muted. Use the window route for sound.

The upload is refused. The picker takes .mp4 files only and says "name" is not a file the library takes. It takes .mp4. for another type. A file over your plan's limit gets "name" is N MB, over the M MB limit for one file. Upload and manage files lists the other messages.
