Add a place to a post: search, suggestions and the map pin

Give a post a place with Search Location, the two suggestion buttons or a map pin, and see what Panoramr stores, what is public and what stays private.

The short answer

On the Create Post page, type a place in Search Location and click a result, or click the suggestion button under the box, or drop a pin with the map button. The place you choose is public with the post. Where the photo was taken is not: it stays private and only helps suggest places. Post a 360 photo has the whole page and says who can post.

Give a post a place

  1. On the Create Post page, or after you click Edit Details on a post in My Panoramrs, click the Search Location box.
  2. Type 2 to 100 characters. The list shows up to 15 places, each with a name and a line of city, state and country. Click one.
  3. Or click a suggestion button below the box, or the pin button, as in the table.
  4. Click Share, or Save when you are editing.

To take a place off, clear the box. A name you type but do not pick is shown as plain text, with no place page and no coordinates.

On the social site, Edit Details in the three-dot menu of your own post opens a different window, headed Edit Post. Its place box reads Add Location (optional), it offers Places near me now but not Places near where this was taken, and it has no pin button. For those, use the post's details page in My Panoramrs.

Way What it does
Typing a name Panoramr's server asks Photon, a place search built on OpenStreetMap data, and lists up to 15 places. Picking one sets the name, the place and its coordinates
Places near where this was taken Shown when Panoramr kept a position from your JPEG. Lists up to 8 businesses and landmarks within 300 meters of it, businesses first, nearest first. Typing afterward finds the neighborhood first
Places near me now Shown when your browser offers location and the button above is not shown. Asks the browser where you are and lists up to 8 places within 300 meters. The list says These are near where you are now, not where the photo was taken.
The pin button An icon with the tooltip Open Map to Set Location. On Create Post a phone also shows the words Pin on Map. It opens the window Pinpoint Location

In Pinpoint Location, type in Search address... and click a result, or click the map to drop the pin, then click Save Coordinates. The map is Google Maps while Panoramr's monthly allowance of Google's maps lasts, with Road and Satellite, and OpenFreeMap, which is built on OpenStreetMap data, after that. If you used the window's own search, its text becomes the post's place name. A result chosen in this window sets the pin and the name, but not the link to the place page: for a place page, pick the place from the Search Location list.

What is stored and who sees it

What Who sees it
The name you picked or typed Everyone: the social feed and the post's page show it
The place's link, made when you pick from the list The name becomes a link to the place page, which needs a sign-in
The coordinates of the place you picked or the pin Public. The place page, for signed-in people, shows a map with the pin, and the data of the post's page holds the numbers
Where the photo was taken You only. It is read from a JPEG's GPS data and kept apart from everything shown. Only your own pages use it: Places near where this was taken sends Photon the position rounded to about 10 meters, a place you type afterward is searched with it rounded to about a kilometer, and your own Panoramrs tab in a tour offers it as Use where the photo was taken (in the Advanced view)
Where you are now Not stored. It is rounded to about 10 meters and passed through Panoramr's server to Photon, to list places

What Panoramr keeps about your photos says more. The Asset Library and a tour's panoramas have their own location boxes: see Add a location to a panorama.

Place pages

A place page is at app.panoramr.com/locations/<number> and needs a sign-in. It shows the place's name and address, a map with a pin, a count of posts, and the 15 newest posts that chose that place; older ones are not listed. It exists while a post that picked the place has coordinates, and its name and pin come from one of those posts. Its address is looked up from the pin the first time the page is opened (Photon again) and kept for a month; if the lookup fails the page shows Location instead.

Troubleshooting

You see What it means and what to do
Nothing found near where you are. Try typing the name of the place. No business or landmark is within 300 meters of the position your browser gave. Type the name
No Places near where this was taken button Panoramr kept no position: the file was not a JPEG, had no GPS data, or the position was gone when the file arrived
A line under the box on a phone For a JPEG with no position the page says No location was found in this photo. When you choose it, tap Options and switch Location on. on an iPhone or iPad, and Your phone takes the location out of photos chosen in the browser, so none was found. on Android. Places near me now is still offered
Nothing found near where this was taken. Try typing its name. No business or landmark within 300 meters. Type the name
Your browser did not share where you are. Allow it for this site, or type the name of the place. You refused the location question, or the browser blocks it for this site. Allow it, or type the name
Where you are could not be found. Try typing the name of the place. The browser could not give a position. Type the name
The list stays empty The place search may not answer, and Panoramr limits how many searches it makes in a minute. Wait a minute, type the name to show it as plain text, or use the pin
The place name is not a link You typed it, chose it in the pin window, or dropped a pin on the details page, instead of picking it from the list
The pin was lost You typed in Search Location after dropping it
